MARIGOLD BIOPESTICIDE AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL CHEMICAL PESTICIDES

Marigold (Tagetes spp) which is considered to be a traditional medicinal plant, has significant therapeutic value and used in treatment of number ailments. This review mainly emphasizes on the role Tagetes as biopesticides especially insecticide, mosquitocide, nematicide, bactericide fungicide. The essential oils obtained from aerial part contain monoterpene hydrocarbons (ocimenes, limonene, terpinene etc) acyclic ketones (tagetones, dihydrotagetone tagetenone) addition lower amount sesquiterpene oxygenated compounds. These components are responsible for insecticidal, larvicidal mosquitocidal property. On other hand species also show strong nematicidal effect .Thus they can suppress nematode field by different techniques such crop rotation or intercropping system exterting allelopahic effect. remarkable biochemical interaction known allelopathy producing potentially bioactive component α-therthienyl that action. sulphur containing compound nematicidal, fungicidal, antiviral cytotoxic oil shows bactericidal fungicidal against plant pathogenic bacteria fungi. not only discusses marigold insecticides, mosquitocides, nematicides, bactericides fungicide but elucidates its ecofriendly potential agricultural an alternative chemical synthetic pesticides.
